Why Retargeting Is the Highest-ROI Thing You Can Do
You're already paying for website traffic. Google Ads, LinkedIn campaigns, SEO, even referrals. Every visitor cost you something to acquire. And 97% of them leave without taking any action.
Retargeting doesn't generate new demand. It recovers demand you already paid for. That makes it the cheapest form of advertising per qualified lead because the hard work of getting someone's attention has already been done.
A B2B buyer visits your website. They're interested but not ready. Maybe they need to talk to a colleague. Maybe they're comparing 3 vendors. Maybe they just got pulled into a meeting. They close the tab and forget.
Retargeting keeps you visible. When that buyer sees your ad on Facebook two days later showing a relevant case study, you're back in consideration. When they see it again the following week with a direct "Book a call" CTA, you've stayed top of mind while your competitors vanished.
Step-by-Step: Setting Up Facebook Retargeting
Step 1: Install the Meta Pixel
If you haven't already, install the Meta Pixel on every page of your website using Google Tag Manager. This is the tracking code that tells Facebook who visited your site. Without it, retargeting is impossible. Follow our Meta Pixel setup guide for the exact steps.
Step 2: Wait for Data (Or Don't)
Ideally, let the pixel collect data for 2-4 weeks before launching retargeting campaigns. But if you already have the pixel installed, you might already have enough data. Facebook needs at least 100 people in a custom audience to serve ads. Check your website analytics: if you get 100+ visitors per month, you're ready.
Step 3: Create Your Audiences
In Meta Ads Manager, go to Audiences > Create Audience > Custom Audience > Website. Create three audiences: (1) All visitors in last 90 days, (2) Pricing/contact page visitors in last 30 days, (3) Blog visitors in last 180 days. Each gets a different message.
Step 4: Create Exclusion Audiences
Upload your current customer email list as a custom audience. Exclude this from all retargeting campaigns. Also exclude people who've already converted (thank you page visitors). You don't want to advertise to people who already bought.
Step 5: Build Your Campaign Structure
Create a Conversions campaign. At the ad set level, select your website visitors audience and exclude customers. Set budget to £10-15/day. Select Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed placements. For the hot retargeting campaign (pricing page visitors), create a separate ad set with £5-10/day.
Step 6: Create Your Ads
For warm retargeting: use case studies, social proof, and client results. The message is 'Here's proof we deliver results.' For hot retargeting (pricing page visitors): use direct CTAs. 'Still comparing options? Let's talk.' Keep creative simple. A single image with clear text works better than clever design.
Step 7: Launch and Monitor
Let campaigns run for 2 weeks before making changes. Monitor frequency (keep it under 10 per month). Check that your exclusions are working (current customers shouldn't see ads). After 2 weeks, review cost per lead and lead quality.
Retargeting Audience Tiers
| Audience | Temperature | Window | Message | Expected CPL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pricing page visitors | 🔥 Hot | 30 days | Direct CTA, social proof | £5-15 |
| Service page visitors | 🔶 Warm | 60 days | Case studies, results | £10-25 |
| All website visitors | 🔵 Cool | 90 days | Educational content, brand | £15-40 |
| Blog readers | ⚪ Cold-ish | 180 days | Lead magnets, newsletter | £20-50 |
| Video viewers (75%+) | 🔶 Warm | 90 days | Next step CTA | £10-30 |
5 Retargeting Mistakes That Waste Your Budget
1. Not excluding current customers
Fix: Upload your customer list and exclude them. Advertising to existing clients wastes budget and annoys people.
2. Same ad for everyone
Fix: Pricing page visitors need different messaging than blog readers. Segment your audiences and tailor the creative.
3. Too high frequency
Fix: Seeing the same ad 15 times in a week is harassment, not marketing. Cap frequency at 8-10 per month. Rotate creative.
4. No creative refresh
Fix: Change your ad creative every 3-4 weeks. Even warm audiences get ad fatigue. New images, new copy, new angles.
5. Retargeting window too short
Fix: B2B sales cycles are long. A 7-day retargeting window misses most of your opportunity. Use 60-180 day windows depending on your cycle.
