Frequently Asked Questions
What is Google Tag Manager?
Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool that lets you manage all your tracking codes from one central dashboard. Instead of editing your website code to add each pixel, you install GTM once and then add all other tags through its interface.
Does GTM slow down my website?
GTM itself is very lightweight and loads asynchronously. The performance impact depends on how many tags you add. Properly configured GTM with a few tracking pixels has minimal impact on page speed.
Can I use GTM with any website platform?
Yes! GTM works with WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, custom-built sites, and virtually any platform that allows you to add custom code to the header and body of your pages.
How do I test if my GTM tags are working?
Use GTM's built-in Preview mode. Click "Preview" in GTM, enter your website URL, and a debug panel will show you which tags fire on each page. You can also use browser extensions like LinkedIn Insight Tag Helper and Meta Pixel Helper.
What are triggers in Google Tag Manager?
Triggers tell GTM when to fire a tag. Common triggers include "All Pages" (fires on every page), "Page View" (fires when a page loads), "Click" (fires when a user clicks something), and "Form Submission" (fires when a form is submitted).
Can I track conversions with GTM?
Yes! GTM excels at conversion tracking. You can create tags that fire on form submissions, button clicks, thank-you pages, or custom events. These can be sent to LinkedIn, Meta, Google Ads, and other platforms simultaneously.
What happens if I make a mistake in GTM?
GTM has built-in version control. Every change is saved as a new version, and you can instantly rollback to any previous version if something goes wrong. This makes it much safer than editing website code directly.
Should I use GTM or install pixels directly?
GTM is better if you have multiple tracking pixels, plan to add more in the future, or want to make changes without a developer. Direct installation is fine for simple setups with just one or two pixels.
