Your list uploaded but the audience is too small. Or it won't upload at all. Here's how to diagnose the problem and fix it fast.
📚 Having trouble uploading? Make sure you're following the correct process in our Complete LinkedIn List Upload Tutorial.
Most of these problems start with a bad file. Grab the LinkedIn company list template and start clean.
LinkedIn requires 300 matched members to use an audience. This is the most common issue.
Your CSV file isn't formatted correctly or is too large.
LinkedIn doesn't recognize your column names.
Your list is stuck in processing.
LinkedIn matches your list against their database of 900M+ profiles. A typical company list should achieve 60-80% match rates. If you're seeing less than 50%, something's wrong.
| List Type | Typical Match Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Company list (with URLs) | 70-85% | Best for B2B targeting |
| Company list (names only) | 40-60% | Add websites to improve |
| Contact list (work emails) | 20-40% | People change jobs/emails |
| Contact list (personal emails) | 5-15% | Not recommended |
Before uploading, run through this checklist to maximize your match rates:
Remove 'Inc.', 'Ltd.', 'LLC' unless that's how they appear on LinkedIn. Check the official company page.
✗ 'Microsoft Corporation' → ✓ 'Microsoft'Include the primary domain without 'www.' or 'https://'. This is LinkedIn's primary matching field.
✗ 'https://www.microsoft.com/' → ✓ 'microsoft.com'The full URL from the company's LinkedIn page. Use the format linkedin.com/company/[company-slug]
✓ 'linkedin.com/company/microsoft'Duplicate entries don't increase matches but can cause processing issues.
Use Excel's 'Remove Duplicates' featureRemove or replace accented characters and symbols that may cause encoding issues.
✗ 'Nestlé' → ✓ 'Nestle'Very small companies or sole traders may not have LinkedIn pages.

Pro tip: Download LinkedIn's CSV template directly from Campaign Manager. This ensures your column headers match exactly what LinkedIn expects. See our step-by-step upload guide →
If you're seeing low match rates with contact lists, switching to company lists is often the fix. Here's why:
Find URLs via LinkedIn Sales Navigator or manual search. This is the highest-impact improvement.
Add primary domain for each company. Use Apollo, ZoomInfo, or manual research.
If 50% of 600 companies match, you get 300. Build buffer into your list.
Company lists typically match 2-3x better than contact lists.

LinkedIn requires 300 matched members minimum. Either upload more records (aim for 1,000+ companies) or add additional identifier columns like company website and LinkedIn URL to improve match rates.
LinkedIn typically processes list uploads within 24-48 hours. If your audience still shows as processing after 48 hours, try re-uploading the list.
Common issues: file over 100MB, wrong encoding (use UTF-8), wrong column headers (download LinkedIn's template), or special characters in company names. Re-export as CSV UTF-8 from Excel.
Contact lists match on email addresses, which often don't match LinkedIn profiles (personal vs. work emails). Switch to company lists, which typically achieve 60-80% match rates vs. 10-30% for contact lists.
Unfortunately, LinkedIn doesn't provide a list of unmatched records. Your best option is to ensure data quality before upload by including multiple identifiers per company.
LinkedIn matched audiences expire after 90 days of inactivity. Re-upload your list to create a new audience. Set a reminder to refresh lists every 60 days to prevent expiration.
