Column by column
What goes in each column
| Header | What goes in it | The mistake people make |
|---|---|---|
email | One email per row | Two emails in one cell |
firstname, lastname | Split names | One "Full name" column |
jobtitle | Their current title | Renaming the header to "title". LinkedIn rejects it |
employeecompany | Where they work now | Where they worked when they entered your CRM in 2019 |
country | Two-letter code | "UK". It's GB |
googleaid | Mobile ad ID, if you have it | Leaving LinkedIn's sample ID in |
Each row needs an email, or a first and last name (add the company to help it match). Email is the only column you can upload hashed. If you don't hash it, LinkedIn hashes it in your browser before saving.
My take
James Green, Evergreen
Honest take: for cold ABM, a contact list is usually the wrong tool.
Plenty of people signed up to LinkedIn with a personal email. Your CRM has their work one. So a chunk of your list never matches. That's why LinkedIn itself tells you to upload 10,000 emails to be sure of hitting 300 members.
Contact lists earn their keep for three jobs:
- Excluding existing customers
- Retargeting people who've already put their hand up
- Event attendees who registered with a work email
For everything else, turn them into a company list. The converter does it in one click.
One rule LinkedIn hides in the small print
You can't combine a contact list with member interests and traits targeting. Plan your audience around that before you build the campaign.
Questions
FAQ
What columns does a LinkedIn contact list need?
Seven headers: email, firstname, lastname, jobtitle, employeecompany, country, googleaid. Don't change them. Every row needs an email, or a first and last name.
Why is my LinkedIn contact list match rate so low?
Mostly the email mismatch. People use a personal email on LinkedIn and a work one with you. Adding first name, last name and company gives LinkedIn a second way to find them.
How many contacts do I need?
300 rows to upload, 300 matched members to serve. LinkedIn recommends uploading at least 10,000 emails to get there.
Should I hash emails before uploading?
You can, with SHA-256, and only the email column. You don't need to. LinkedIn hashes unhashed emails in your browser before they're saved.
Contact list or company list?
Company list for cold accounts. Contact list for exclusions, retargeting known leads and event lists. Full comparison →
Can I use a contact list to exclude customers?
Yes. Upload them and add the list as an exclusion. Even a partial match cuts wasted spend.
List sorted. Now the hard bit.
Uploading is easy. Turning a list into meetings is where most campaigns fall over: the wrong job titles layered on, boring ads, budget spread too thin.
That's the bit we do for niche B2B firms.
