How to Add a User to LinkedIn Campaign Manager (2026)

You've hired an agency or brought someone on board to run your LinkedIn Ads. Now they need access to your Campaign Manager. Pick the wrong permission level and they either can't do their job, or they've got the keys to things they don't need.

Good news: this genuinely takes about 2 minutes. Here's exactly what to click and which role to choose.

Written by James Green — I manage LinkedIn Ads accounts across dozens of industries. This is based on real onboarding experience, not LinkedIn's help articles.

🚩 You MUST Own Your LinkedIn Ad Account

This might be the most important section on this page. Read it before you do anything else.

If Your Agency Runs Ads From Their Own Account, That's a Problem

Some agencies will say "we'll just run it from our account, it's easier." It is easier. For them. Not for you.

Here's what you lose when you don't own the ad account:

    • ✗ All campaign data, audience insights, and conversion history belong to them
    • ✗ Your Insight Tag data and retargeting audiences sit in their account
    • ✗ You can't log in and see what they're doing with your budget
    • ✗ If the relationship ends, you start from absolute zero with a new agency
    • ✗ They can lock you out. You have zero leverage.

    What You Should Insist On

    • ✓ You create and own the LinkedIn Campaign Manager ad account
    • ✓ You own the Insight Tag and conversion tracking
    • ✓ Your agency gets user access (Account Manager role) to do their work
    • ✓ You can see every campaign, every penny spent, every result
    • ✓ Switch agency and keep all your data, audiences, and history intact

Any agency worth working with will set it up this way without being asked. If they resist, that tells you everything you need to know.

    Why Grant Campaign Manager Access?

Campaign Manager is the control centre for all your LinkedIn advertising. Your agency, your marketing hire, your freelancer, whoever is touching your ads needs proper access. Not your LinkedIn login. Proper, permissioned access that you can revoke in two clicks.

    Secure

No shared passwords. Pull access in seconds.

    Auditable

Full activity history. See who changed what.

    Controlled

Give exactly the permissions they need. Nothing more.

    Understanding Permission Levels

Pick the right one based on what this person actually needs to do:

    RoleBest ForWhat They Can Do
Account ManagerAgencies, senior marketersEverything: campaigns, billing, user management
Campaign ManagerTeam members, freelancersCreate and edit campaigns, but can't change account settings
ViewerStakeholders, reportingSee data and download reports. Can't change anything.
Billing AdminFinance teamPayment methods and invoices only

The short version: For an agency managing your campaigns, go with Account Manager. It gives them everything they need without you sharing your login.

Thinking about whether to use an agency or keep it in-house? We wrote an honest comparison of agency vs in-house that might help you decide.

Step-by-Step: Add a User to LinkedIn Campaign Manager

    1Go to Campaign Manager

Head to linkedin.com/campaignmanager and select the ad account you want to share.

Click the gear icon (Account Settings) in the top right, then click "Manage access".

Click the gear icon, then 'Manage access' to see current users and add new ones.

    2Click "Add User to Account"

On the Manage Access page, click "Add user to account".

Enter the person's email address. Important: this has to be the email linked to their LinkedIn profile. Then choose the permission level (Account Manager for agencies, Viewer for people who just need to see reports).

Enter the email address and select the permission level. Use 'Account Manager' for agencies.

    3Save and Confirm

Click "Save". They'll get an email invitation. Ask them to confirm they've accepted and can see the account in their Campaign Manager.

Not arriving? Double-check the email matches their LinkedIn account. Also worth checking spam and junk folders.

    Bonus: Grant LinkedIn Page Access

Here's the bit people miss. If your agency is running Sponsored Content (which is the most common LinkedIn ad format by far), they also need access to your LinkedIn Company Page. Without it, they can only run Text Ads and Message Ads, which are rarely what you want.

How to Add a Page Admin:

    1. Go to your LinkedIn Company Page
    2. Click "Settings" at the top
    3. Under "Manage admins", click "Page admins"
    4. Add the person by name or email. Choose "Sponsored Content Poster" or "Super Admin"

Page Settings → Manage admins. Grant your agency 'Sponsored Content Poster' access.

Best practice: "Sponsored Content Poster" is the safest role for agencies. They can create ads from your page but can't change your page settings or post organic content.

Next Step: Install Your LinkedIn Insight Tag

Access sorted. Now the critical bit. If your Insight Tag isn't installed on your website, your agency can't track conversions, build retargeting audiences, or tell you which campaigns are actually bringing in leads. It's the foundation of everything.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Letting your agency run ads from their own account

→ You must own the ad account. They get user access. If they push back on this, find a different agency.

    Using the wrong email address

→ The email has to match their LinkedIn account. Ask them to confirm which email they use for LinkedIn before you send the invite.

Giving Viewer access to someone who needs to manage campaigns

→ If they need to create, edit, or pause campaigns, they need Campaign Manager or Account Manager. Viewer is read-only.

Forgetting to grant LinkedIn Page access

→ Without Page access, they can't create Sponsored Content ads (the most effective format). Add them as Sponsored Content Poster on your Company Page.

    Sharing your personal LinkedIn login

→ Just don't. Add them as a user instead. It's more secure, you can revoke it instantly, and you have a full audit trail.

Not installing the Insight Tag first

→ Without it, you can't track conversions or build retargeting audiences. Get this done before any money is spent.

Not checking they received the invitation

→ Always confirm with the person that they got the invite and accepted it. Check spam folders if it's not showing up.
